Ford Cuts 3,000 Jobs as It Restructures and Reduces Costs

Reports from earlier this summer suggested that Ford may trim a number of jobs from its ranks as the company looks to restructure for the future. Now, a memo sent to employees confirms that the layoffs have indeed begun.

Ford will lay off approximately 3,000 people, The Wall Street Journal reports. These layoffs will see a reduction of about 2,000 internal salaried positions, in addition to about 1,000 agency positions. Representatives for Ford did not immediately return a request for comment, but a spokesperson told The Verge that the layoffs will focus more on the company's Ford Blue division, which covers the automaker's internal-combustion projects, as it remains the larger side of Ford's business.

"We are eliminating work, as well as reorganizing and simplifying functions throughout the business," wrote Chairman Bill Ford and CEO Jim Farley in a jointly written memo to employees, which The Verge posted in full in its report. The memo states that Ford will provide "significant help to find new career opportunities."

According to The Wall Street Journal, Ford is looking to cut approximately $3 billion in annual costs by 2026 with the goal of reaching a pretax profit margin of 10%. Last year, Ford's pretax profit margins hovered around 7.3%.

In March, Ford reorganized its business into two halves, which the automaker called its Ford Plus plan. Ford Blue will continue to focus on internal-combustion vehicles and reducing their development costs, while Ford Model E looks to the future with an eye toward EVs, software and connected-car tech. This is in addition to the Ford Pro division, which covers the automaker's commercial efforts.

Keep Fruits and Vegetables Fresh Longer: Tips That Actually Work, According to Experts

This story is part of Home Tips, CNET's collection of practical advice for getting the most out of your home, inside and out.

Summer is a great time to take advantage of the many fruits and vegetables that are in season (and relatively cheap). The problem is when too much time passes by and the strawberries and spinach you intended on eating go bad. There have been plenty of times when I've had berries sitting in the fridge and found them spoiled within the week. The good news is there are ways to combat this issue by taking a few steps before storing produce in the fridge.

CNET Home Tips logo

With the help of some chefs, educators and other experts, we've come up with tips to keep your favorite fruits and vegetables fresh for as long as possible. You can also check out our tips on whether or not it's cheaper to buy a meal kit compared to grocery shopping, and how to get that organized TikTok fridge look.

How to keep herbs fresh

If you like making your dishes with fresh herbs like parsley and cilantro, you know that a bunch can go bad if you don't use it all at once. Experts recommend a couple of different methods to keep herbs fresh as long as possible. You can trim the bottom stems, and place them in water in the fridge, according to Kelsey Riley, founder of vegan recipe site Planted in the Kitchen -- so long as you remember to change the water daily.

Another option is to wrap herbs in a damp paper towel and seal them in an airtight bag, says Christina Bailey, a private chef and culinary instructor for cooking class provider Cozymeal. Olivia Roszkowski, chef instructor of Health-Supportive Culinary Arts at the Institute of Culinary Education, advises wrapping a damp towel around fresh herbs to preserve them longer. "This helps prevent wilting while soaking up excess moisture that can cause rot," she says.

How to keep leafy greens and root vegetables fresh

Keeping leafy greens such as spinach, kale and lettuce fresh require making the refrigerator environment as dry as possible. Extra lettuce will last longer if you place layers of paper towels between the lettuce leaves and seal it with plastic wrap. "The paper towels will retain the moisture as it comes out, and this can prevent lettuce from wilting as fast, but make sure to swap out the paper towels when they get damp," says Jen Stark, founder of gardening and home improvement blog Happy DIY Home. You should also remove any spoiled leaves in salad mixes to prevent bacteria from spreading across the rest of the produce, Roszkowski says.

Bailey also swears by wrapping dark leafy greens like kale in damp paper towels to help them last longer. She takes the same approach with root vegetables such as celery, carrots and parsnips. "If you have celery that has become floppy and lost its crunch, make a fresh cut at the very bottom of the stalks, and soak them in a bowl of cold water for a little while," she explains. "The stalks may not regain all of their original freshness, but the fibers can absorb some of the water and get a bit of texture back."

To prevent carrots from drying out, Stark recommends chopping off the leafy green parts before you store them, and putting the carrots in a sealed container full of water before storing them in the fridge. "Carrot leaves pull nutrients from the roots, but once you cut them off and follow this process, fresh carrots can last between three and four weeks," she says.

To keep fruits fresh longer, you'll want to keep fruits with skins or peels separate from each other.

To keep those precious summer berries from going bad, you should store them in a container with small holes, on top of a paper towel. This prevents them from getting mushy and molding, according to Brittany Kline, a food preservation expert.

To increase freshness, you'll want to keep fruits with skins or peels (like bananas and peaches) separate from each other, says Natalia Thompson, CEO and Recipe Creator at Flavorful Home. The reason is ethylene gas, a natural gas produced by most fruits and veggies as they ripen. "If you're keeping them in a fruit basket or a crisper drawer all together, chances are they contribute to the faster ripening of each other, making them spoil faster in the process," Thompson said. Additionally, she advises against keeping apples, bananas and tomatoes in particular close to each other because they are all heavy producers of ethylene gas.

Likewise, these fruits should not be placed with other produce like artichokes, broccoli, cabbage, cauliflower or lettuce. "These are sensitive to ethylene gas too, even when they don't produce the gas themselves," says Thompson. However, if your fruits ripen sooner than anticipated, you can freeze certain ones, such as avocado, bananas, berries, pineapple or mango for later use.

Make sure the fridge temperature is set accurately. This will also help your produce last longer.

One last tip: Check your fridge temperature

While all of these tips and tricks will help keep your produce fresh for longer, they ultimately rely on one thing: your refrigerator. That means you want to make sure your temperature is set correctly and is accurate. The best way to check your fridge's temperature is by using a candy or bulb-style thermometer and then adjusting the dial in your fridge accordingly (learn more about how to test your fridge's temperature here). If the temperature isn't cooperating after a few times of troubleshooting, it may be time to replace your fridge (check out CNET's top refrigerator picks).

Once you verify that your fridge is in good working order, you want to make sure you're storing your produce in the right place. Most fridges have drawers that are specified for fruits or veggies, based on the needs of that produce -- don't ignore them.

As always, it's best to buy your fruits and vegetables in season, and to use them sooner rather than later. But if you want to prolong their life, these tips and techniques can help you do so, ultimately saving you money. 5 tips to save money on your heating bill this winter

As temperatures plummet each winter, it's common to feel a hit in the wallet as those heating bills go up. Some years can even see drastic swings in energy costs themselves. For instance, shortages in natural gas had energy experts predicting in the early fall of 2021 that consumers would likely see double-digit percentage increases in their heating bills during winter.

As heating bill prices can be unpredictable, it makes saving on your heating bill that much more important. Below we'll explore five ways that you can save on your heating bill. Many of these tips range from easy lifestyle adjustments to investing in better equipment.

1. Turn down the thermostat

We've all likely heard this advice. However, it bears repeating since it's the easiest and most direct way to save on energy costs. It might feel nice to keep the home toasty so you don't have to bundle up as much. But the US Department of Energy states that you could save as much as 10% annually on heating costs by turning down the thermostat 7 to 10 degrees Fahrenheitfor eight hours per day.

The beautiful part of turning down your thermostat is that you might do it while you're not home during the day so that you don't even notice the difference. You might also consider lowering the thermostat at night. According to the Mayo Clinic, sleeping in colder temperatures might even aid in our body's natural temperature drops at night and lead to more restful sleep. You might want to try keeping your house cooler at night, and if you find you don't mind it or even like it, you just found an easy way to save on heating costs this winter.

Today's smart thermostats even make it easier than ever. You simply set a prerecorded schedule for when you'd like the house to drop several degrees and when to rise several degrees. Set the heat to go up a bit before you tend to get up in the morning, and your house will be warm when you need to get out of bed.

2. Go green with renewable energy

Solar handles electricity output, so it might not seem like going solar would affect your heating bills. However, if you run an entirely electric central heating system, you might not have to pay gas heating bills at all. This is admittedly the most involved tip on the list. You might have to invest in a solar array, a solar battery and even installing central electric heating. But that way, you avoid the fluctuating costs of natural gas.

The great part about solar is that the panels can still collect energy for your home even in the winter. They just need some extra TLC, like removing the snow from them in northern climates or insulating batteries. You can learn more about winter solar panel care in our guide.

You might also look into which credits are available in your area for solar and if you qualify, such as the 26% tax credit. Solar panels also have the popular benefit of allowing you to sell surplus energy back to the utility companies, if your local utility participates.

If going all solar in your home isn't a time or monetary commitment you can make right now, you might even look for other green ways to save on your overall electric and heating expenses. One easy way is to outfit your camper with portable solar panels. You might even look into small solar gadgets that can take the load off that heating/electric bill, like solar device chargers or a solar water heater kit.

3. Upgrade your equipment

If you're running an old furnace, chances are you're burning more energy than you need to be. According to the US Department of Energy, fuel efficiency ratings on newer high-efficiency heating systems can run from 90 to 98.5%, as opposed to older low-efficiency systems at 56 to 70%. With electricity prices getting more erratic recently, now might be the time to make the investment a priority.

You might also look into different ways that you can heat your home. We mentioned all-electric systems supported by solar panels above, but there are also heat pumps instead of furnaces. Heat pumps transfer heat from outside, so they tend to be a popular consideration in more temperate climates. You can learn more about heat pumps vs. furnaces in our guide.

4. Six easy tips for managing your home's temperature

Beyond updating your equipment, playing with your thermostat or investing in a renewable energy alternative, you can also make little changes that help with your heating bill. These likely won't overhaul your heating bill like new equipment would, but if you feel every little bit helps, you can try a few options like:

  • Open your window shades, curtains or blinds to let the sun in during the day, as that will put less stress on your furnace.
  • Even baking or cooking at home is an easy way to heat up your home during the day.
  • Put draft stoppers on the doors.
  • Winterize your windows with storm windows outside or plastic covering inside.
  • Keep your heating vents clear of dust and debris.
  • Portable, efficient space heaters can mean turning down the overall temperature but keeping the room you're in warm.

Sometimes little lifestyle habits may leave you surprised about how much you've saved on the energy bill.

5. Check your home for air leaks

An incredibly important part of making sure your home isn't basically leaking money in the winter is to make sure your home has no air leaks. Call the professionals to check for any air leaks in your home; they'll likely perform a blower door test.

You might also want to insulate and seal your home against energy or heat loss yourself. You can read more about how to insulate and air seal in our guide.

A few final tips to help you save

Since electric costs and heating costs are the same bill for many people, you can even work on reducing your electric consumption to help with that bill overall. Here are several resources to help you save on your electric bill:

It's also hard to know where to save on your electric bill if you don't know what the biggest energy sinks in your home are. Enter smart plugs with energy monitoring, which helps you read how much energy each device in your home takes and helps you track your energy output.

Down the line, if you should ever move, you may want to make sure the house you're buying is energy efficient. That will help reduce the urge to scream when you open your winter energy bill in the future, as well as other utility bills. This guide shows the different types of systems to keep an eye out for when house hunting. There are the obvious signs that the home might be energy efficient, like the giant solar array on the roof. Some subtler sustainability signs to watch out for include water harvesting systems, tankless water heaters and reclaimed wood.

How to place, install carbon monoxide detectors in your home

How to place, install carbon monoxide detectors in your home

Carbon monoxide is a colorless and odorless gas, but that makes it all the more dangerous. The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention reports that 430 people die and 50,000 are hospitalized annually due to carbon monoxide poisoning -- primarily in household settings. You're probably aware of where to put smoke detectors and the importance of fire safety. But carbon monoxide detectors are as critical to you and your family's safety.

Here's everything you need to know about where to put them and how to use them.

Where should you place CO detectors?

If you're not sure of where to install CO detectors, you're not alone. Carbon monoxide detectors aren't as common as smoke alarms, leaving many people guessing on where to place them. The Consumer Product Safety Commission says proper carbon monoxide detector placement is "on each level of the home and outside sleeping areas."

For more specific spots, it's important to understand how carbon monoxide works. It's produced by flame sources or fuel-burning machines such as fireplaces, furnaces, gas driers, water heaters and vehicles. The gas is a slightly lighter than air and will rise, which can lead to carbon monoxide poisoning.

The best place for a CO detector is on a wall roughly five feet from the floor, where it can measure the air at a height that people in the house are breathing it. A reasonable alternative is placing the detector on the ceiling and six inches from the wall. Here are the best places to install CO detectors by room.

In the kitchen

The key to placing a CO detector in the kitchen is to avoid mounting it near or over a flame-producing appliance such as a stove, grill or fireplace. To avoid false alarms, install a detector 5 to 20 feet away from a fire source.

Outside bedrooms

As mentioned, the CPSC recommends at least one carbon monoxide detector on each level of a home, outside sleeping areas. The recommendation is based on having a minimum number of detectors. Putting one in the hall allows all bedrooms to hear the warning if CO gas is detected -- which is particularly important as the symptoms of carbon monoxide poisoning are often mild enough that they won't wake you.

If you have multiple detectors, it's a good idea to install them in bedrooms as well.

Basements and more

The International Association of Fire Chiefs recommends a CO detector in the basement since laundry machines, water heaters and furnaces are all potential sources of carbon monoxide -- and are often kept in the basement. In addition, installing a CO detector in the room or space over an attached garage is a good idea, as vehicles are one of the most common CO producers.

How to install carbon monoxide detectors

To install, follow the instructions that came with your CO detector. Here are the general steps, with a few tips.

1. Try to keep installations at least six feet away from a flame or fuel source to avoid false alarms. You can mount the device on the wall at least 5 feet from the ground, or on the ceiling six inches from the wall. Some devices plug directly into an outlet.

2. Trace and drill holes and hang the mounting bracket.

3. Be sure to use fresh batteries.

4. Test the device by pressing and holding the test button. You should see lights as well as hear an alarm.

5. Attach the CO detector to the mounting bracket.

CO alarm maintenance

Smoke and CO alarms both need regular maintenance to operate properly. To maintain a CO alarm, start by pressing the device's test button to check its battery level. Even if the device works, you should replace the batteries at least once a year.

Should carbon monoxide detectors be replaced?

CO detectors have a limited life span. Unlike smoke detectors that make a chirpy, warning sound when the battery is low, CO detectors start chirping when it's time to replace them. Plan to replace your CO alarms every five years.

Types of carbon monoxide detectors

There are three main types of carbon monoxide detectors available. To choose the type that works best for your home, learn more about each type.

Smoke/CO dual detectors: Some detectors are all-in-one, able to detect smoke and CO gas. They're best for space-challenged homes or areas where you want to reduce visual clutter. Many smart detectors are a combination. They are capable of notifying you of either event.

Battery-operated CO detectors: Battery CO detectors are the easiest and most flexible type to install. They use sensor technology that reacts to extended CO gas exposure. You can mount the device anywhere and even move it, since it doesn't rely on a fixed power source. However, you'll need to change batteries once per year to ensure the detector has enough energy to operate properly for another 12 months.

Hardwired or plug-in CO detectors: Detectors that can be wired to an existing household current -- or plugged into an outlet -- are low maintenance because they don't need batteries. The sensor cycles itself to purge and resample for carbon monoxide.

What to do if your CO detector goes off

If your sensor goes off, you'll need to act quickly. Having a home safety plan that covers what to do in case of an emergency could be a lifesaver. Not all events that cause the CO detector to sound off require calling 911. A good first step is to check on everyone in the house to find out if anyone has symptoms similar to having the flu such as nausea, dizziness or a headache.

If one or more individuals are feeling sick, evacuate your home to avoid extended exposure to CO gas. Make sure that everyone who is affected goes outside to breathe in fresh air and call 911. If no one is feeling sick, you can contact the fire department or a certified technician to investigate the possibility of a problem. Ventilate the rooms, reset the alarm and turn off gas-burning appliances, waiting outside or at a neighbor's house if possible while you seek guidance from specialists.

New Apple Silicon Macs Will Handle Resident Evil Village With Ease

This story is part of WWDC 2022, CNET's complete coverage from and about Apple's annual developers conference.

Apple on Monday announced MacOS Ventura, as well as the new second-gen Apple Silicon chip called the M2 at its Worldwide Developers Conference. The new version of the operating system, in concert with the M2, aims to boost user productivity and creativity, but gamers will also notice some big changes.

Apple plans to upgrade its Metal software, which helps power games. Metal 3 will support MetalFX Upscaling, which means developers can render rich, realistic graphics faster. MetalFX renders smaller, less compute-intensive frames that can be upscaled. In addition, Metal 3's fast resource loading API minimizes wait time when playing games.

During WWDC, Apple showed off a new Mac running Resident Evil Village and No Man's Sky. Both games will be coming to Macs using the Apple silicon later this year. A MacBook Air will run Resident Evil Village 1080p well, and a Mac Studio can play at 4K, according to Masaru Ijuin, Capcom's advanced technical research division manager.

Apple's Metal updates and new M2 Chip should give new Macs gaming power, fast loading times and fluid gameplay that was once only available on high-performance consoles and gaming PCs.

Talkspace vs. BetterHelp overview

Talkspace and BetterHelp are both online therapy companies that facilitate the process of finding a therapist. They're both subscription-based, meaning you'll pay a monthly fee for the services you use.

The great thing about online therapy is that it's as effective as in-person therapy without the hassle of a commute or a waiting room. Talkspace and BetterHelp both take the pressure off finding a therapist since both match you to a provider based on answers you provide in an initial questionnaire and preferences.

Here's a quick overview of services offered, cost and features you'll get with a subscription from both platforms.

Talkspace vs. BetterHelp cost

Many often turn to online therapy because it's convenient and affordable. In most of the US, therapy typically costs between $100 to $200 per session. These online therapy platforms offer quality mental health services for a fraction of that price. Here's an overview of the different plans offered by both.

Talkspace online therapy cost

Sessions with Talkspace can cost you from $69 to $99. Pricing varies depending on your location and therapist availability. Unlike BetterHelp, Talkspace offers tiered plans.

Messaging therapy -- $69 per week

With this plan, you get unlimited messaging with your therapist. You can send text, video and audio messages to your provider at any time. However, your therapist may not respond immediately -- you're guaranteed daily responses five days a week.

Live therapy -- $99 per week

You'll get four 45-minute live sessions a month with this plan. Live sessions can be through audio, text or video.

Live plus messaging therapy -- $129 a week

Live plus messaging therapy: As the name suggests, you get text and live therapy. You'll get unlimited text, video and audio messaging plus four monthly 45-minute live sessions.

BetterHelp online therapy cost

Therapy sessions with BetterHelp range from $60 to $90 per session. The exact price of your sessions depends on your preferences, therapist expertise and location. One thing to note is that when you sign up for BetterHelp, you'll be billed upfront for the first month.

Talkspace vs. BetterHelp signup process

Both online therapy platforms offer similar experiences when signing up. You answer an initial questionnaire (although BetterHelp's assessment is more extensive) about your mood, demographics, preferences and goals. You'll then get matched with a therapist.

Getting you matched with a counselor is where the platforms differ. BetterHelp matches you with a therapist based on your answers using an algorithm. Some people prefer to speak with a person because the responses seem impersonal and robotic.

On the other hand, Talkspace matches you with a therapist using an agent who is also a licensed therapist. You'll be matched with three counselors, and you choose who you'd like to continue working with.

On both platforms, once you start working with a therapist, you'll be taken to a secure, private chat room where you can start messaging your counselor.

If you don't like the counselor you were matched with, you can request a change on either platform free of charge.

Talkspace vs. BetterHelp features

Both platforms offer tools and resources to help you stay on track with your mental health. Here are some of the most noteworthy features of both.

Talkspace special features

Progress tracker: Once you've paid your membership, you get access to a progress tracker that helps you visualize your journey. You can set goals with your therapists and see how you're doing.

Self-help exercises: Talkspace offers tools to help you navigate day-to-day life. There are exercises available that help you manage anxiety, stress and negative thoughts. Most exercises are between 1 and 15 minutes long.

BetterHelp special features

Journal: Upon signing up, you'll gain access to a virtual journal where you can write down anything you want -- goals, thoughts, feelings. This journal is private, so no one will have access to it unless you decide to share it with your therapist.

Group therapy: This is what BetterHelp calls "groupinars." No matter what membership you decide on, you'll have access to weekly live seminars that cover multiple topics including depression and anxiety.

Talkspace vs. BetterHelp therapist qualifications

Let's get into how therapists stack up against each other on Talkspace and BetterHelp. On both platforms, therapists are licensed and have experience in their field of specialization. So no matter which platform you choose, you'll be working with a professional.

On BetterHelp, all therapists and counselors are trained and accredited marriage and family therapists, clinical social workers, licensed professional counselors and psychologists. Each BetterHelp therapist possesses at least three years and 1,000 hours of experience.

To become a member of Talkspace's clinical network, mental health professionals must be licensed in the state they practice and have an LMFT, LPCC, LCSW or Ph.D. in clinical psychology.

Talkspace vs. BetterHelp customer reviews

When talking about customer experience, there's a lot to say about Talkspace and BetterHelp. Of the two, BetterHelp holds the best score for customer satisfaction, holding an average 4.6 out of 5 stars on Trustpilot. Customers report that BetterHelp does a good job matching therapists to clients and that it's convenient and easy to use.

Even though Talkspace offers more services and tools than BetterHelp, its customer satisfaction score is surprisingly low, with 1.3 out of 5 stars. The most common complaints are unauthorized charges to their credit cards, bad customer service and difficulty using the mobile app. Other customers said that they had good experiences with therapists but not with Talkspace.

Talkspace vs. BetterHelp: Which should you choose?

Deciding which platform is best for you comes down to a few factors. You should consider the type of service you're looking for, whether you need the platform to take insurance and if you need financial aid or medication management.

BetterHelp is the best option if you're looking for live sessions with a therapist, if you may need financial aid and if you're OK with paying out-of-pocket.

Talkspace is the best option if you mostly want to text a therapist, seek psychiatric care or have an insurance provider that covers mental health services on Talkspace.

The most important thing to consider is whether you'll be matched with a therapist who understands your needs and can provide the resources you require to embark on your mental wellness journey.

Talkspace vs. Betterhelp FAQS

What are Talkspace and BetterHelp?

Talkspace and BetterHelp are online therapy platforms that operate on a subscription-based model. They both match you with a therapist they deem fit based on answers you provide in an initial assessment and your preferences.

Which is better, BetterHelp or Talkspace?

Both platforms offer great services and facilitate the process of finding a therapist. The best one for you depends on the type of service you are looking for, if you prefer your insurance provider to cover the cost and if you need your therapist to prescribe medication.

Do BetterHelp and Talkspace take insurance?

Only Talkspace takes insurance from major insurance providers, excluding Medicare and Medicaid. BetterHelp does not take insurance, but it does provide financial aid for those who qualify.

NASA's Haunting Remix Lets You Hear What a Black Hole Sounds Like

NASA's Haunting Remix Lets You Hear What a Black Hole Sounds Like

During black hole week, back in May, NASA dropped a remix that will haunt you until the end of your days.

More specifically, the space agency made a melody from the soundwaves of a vast, monstrous black hole that sits more than 200 million light-years away from Earth. The black hole is found in the center of what's known as the Perseus galaxy cluster, which is a majestic 11 million-light-year-wide bundle of galaxies shrouded by hot gas.

And although the sheer magnitude of Perseus and its galaxies is jaw-dropping, astronomers have been most interested in … all that hot gas. The space clouds are precisely why we're able to hear the sounds of something we can barely even see or conceptualize: the massive black hole at Perseus' center.

They're likely exactly what you'd expect a black hole to sound like: eerie, scary, mysterious, maybe something Thom Yorke can sample for his next album. Maybe even pained, if you listen carefully enough.

Anyway, now that you have your black hole week soundtrack, here are the specifics of what you're hearing.

Decades ago, astronomers discovered Perseus' void-like interior sends out pressure waves. These waves sort of ripple through all the surrounding hot gas in the area, and those ripples, in essence, can be translated into sound.

Think of sound waves as the vibration of air -- or rather, the vibration of things (atoms, molecules) within the air. Our ears can capture those vibrations and turn them into listenable noise here on Earth, but in space, things are a little different.

Because space is a vacuum, there isn't any medium for sound waves to travel through. This is why space is often considered totally quiet. But the silence isn't because cosmic objects aren't making sounds. Their waves just don't have anything to vibrate.

Perseus' black hole, on the other hand, gets past this space vacuum sound barrier because it's so close to the cluster's gas. It can create sound wave vibrations, and those are the hot gas ripples scientists are focused on.

As such, in 2003, a team from NASA's Chandra X-ray Observatory took astronomical data from the gassy ripples and translated that into normal sound waves we're used to on Earth. But, for a long time, there was a major hurdle preventing us from listening to the black hole's song. When scientists completed the translation, or sonification process, they found that Perseus' abyss plays a note that's a whopping 57 octaves below middle C.

Our human ears can't hear that, which is where NASA's remix comes in.

In honor of black hole week, the agency extracted the already-identified black hole sound waves and scaled them up by 57 and 58 octaves so we can all, finally, listen to the call of the void.

"Another way to put this," NASA said, "is that the [sound waves] are being heard 144 quadrillion and 288 quadrillion times higher than their original frequency."

And, as an added bonus, NASA also released another, much less ominous, black hole sonification. This one's of the abyss at the center of the galaxy Messier 87, aka the black hole that's famous for being the first-ever photographed chasm.

This track, however, is only so beautiful because it's not exactly the product of pure, isolated astronomical data sonification like the music of Perseus' void. It comes from three different vessels of data -- Chandra X-rays, optical light from Hubble and radio waves from the Atacama Large Millimeter Array in Chile -- overlaid upon one another.

The X-rays play high tones, optical light data play medium tones and radio waves are the alto's with the lowest tones.

Together, they make a bittersweet symphony.

The Amazfit GTS smartwatch is at an all-time low of $80

This sleek Amazfit GTS looks a lot like an Apple Watch and the smartwatch has scored consistently high marks with CNET editors. It's light and has a stunning 1.65-inch AMOLED display. (That's roughly equivalent to 42mm.) It's also never been cheaper than it is right now, down to an all-time low of $80 at B&H -- the previous low was $100. The sleek GTS wearable is available in six colors at this sale price and it ships for free.

Much like the Apple Watch, the GTS offers heart-rate monitoring, activity tracking and all manner of notifications. It's also water-resistant to 5 ATM, meaning you can bring it into the shower, ocean or pool.

CNET's former deals guru Rick Broida did some brief testing on this model last year and liked this smartwatch a lot, namely the speed and consistency of the raise-to-wake feature and the smooth responsiveness of the onscreen menus. The Amazfit app lets you choose from a few dozen watch faces (some cool, some classy, some geeky), but you can also load a custom background (like, say, a photo of the family dog). Battery life lives up to Amazfit's promise of 14 days, though lots of variables can affect power consumption. But even if it manages only half that, it's a solid improvement over the Apple Watch and many others.

For a solid wearable with excellent battery life and a smart look, $80 is an excellent price and an easy recommendation.

Netflix's 'BioShock' Film Locks in 'I Am Legend' Director and 'Logan' Screenwriter

Netflix's 'BioShock' Film Locks in 'I Am Legend' Director and 'Logan' Screenwriter

Netflix has finally announced who will be helming and writing its live-action adaptation of the beloved BioShock video game franchise, hinting at how the movie could turn out.

In a tweet, Netflix revealed that the BioShock movie will be directed by Francis Lawrence, who previously directed the 2007 zombie actioner I Am Legend, the 2005 Keanu Reeves-starring occult thriller Constantine and four of the five Hunger Games films -- all of which were big-budget adaptations of novels or comics. That's encouraging, given how high expectations are for a live-action version of BioShock, a beloved series of haunting action games set in failed utopian cities.

The movie will be based on a script by Michael Green, who has an even longer resume adapting geeky material, like writing and producing the American Gods TV series and scripting the films Logan, Alien: Covenant and Blade Runner 2049, as well as both Murder on the Orient Express and Death on the Nile. In other words, he's very experienced with adaptations of established material, as well as riffing on genre conventions, given his earlier TV work writing for shows like Smallville, Heroes and Kings.

It's the first news about the film we've gotten since Netflix announced the adaptation in February, so we're still largely in the dark about how close it'll adhere to the games. And we're still waiting for anything on the cast and release date.

Will Your iPhone Get iOS 16? Everything to Know

Will Your iPhone Get iOS 16? Everything to Know

This story is part of WWDC 2022, CNET's complete coverage from and about Apple's annual developers conference.

Apple's next big iPhone update, iOS 16, will bring a collection of new features to your iPhone. Previewed at WWDC 2022 last week, its features will include the ability to edit messages you already sent in the Messages app; new tools to personalize your iPhone, like how your lock screen looks; and new automations for sharing pictures in Photo Libraries with friends.

But all these goodies will only be available to people with the iPhone 8 and later models. This means any phones introduced in 2016 or earlier, including the iPhone 6S, iPhone SE and iPhone 7, won't be getting Apple software updates anymore. It's not an unexpected move, given that the company regularly retires software support on older devices.

To be clear, if you have an older device, it and all your apps should continue to work for now even without the update with all the shiny new features. But since you won't be getting new iOS updates, that could leave your device vulnerable to hacks and malware because software updates also often include patches for bugs. Apple may continue to offer some security updates to these older devices, as it's done with iPhone 5 and iPhone 6 devices. But even if it does, it's likely the updates will only include critical vulnerabilities, which could still leave devices open to attack. To keep up with potential vulnerabilities and to see what, if any, security updates will be available to you, be sure to keep your eye on Apple Security updates.

Hidden Dinosaur Tracks Emerge in Texas State Park During Drought

Severe drought across the western US  is largely terrible news, but Texas saw an interesting side effect when hidden dinosaur tracks appeared in Dinosaur Valley State Park southwest of Dallas. The paleontological treasure came to light in a dried-out riverbed.

"Due to the excessive drought conditions this past summer, the river dried up completely in most locations, allowing for more tracks to be uncovered here in the park," Texas Parks spokesperson Stephanie Salinas Garcia told CNET in a statement. "Under normal river conditions, these newer tracks are under water and are commonly filled in with sediment, making them buried and not as visible."

The exposed dinosaur footprints at Dinosaur Valley State Park in Texas will likely soon be covered by water and mud again.

Paul Baker/Friends of Dinosaur Valley State Park

Most of the tracks that appeared in the river belong to a bipedal theropod called Acrocanthosaurus, which would have stood around 15 feet (4.6 meters) tall and weighed up to seven tons.

Friends of Dinosaur Valley State Park, a nonprofit that supports the park, has been posting updates to its Facebook page. Volunteers recently helped to clear mud and debris from exposed footprints on what the group called "one of the longest dinosaur trackways in the world."

The visibility of the tracks won't last. The park closed trails on Monday due to rain, but reopened them on Wednesday, saying the tracks were still visible. The park encourages reservations since it often reaches visitor capacity.

The dry spell has marked a rare opportunity to map and measure the tracks, but rain will be welcomed in a state facing prolonged drought. The upside, according to Garcia, is that sediment deposited by the river will help protect the tracks from weathering and erosion, preserving them for the future.
