AT&T Adjusts Top Plan, Removes Unlimited Elite and HBO Max Option

AT&T Adjusts Top Plan, Removes Unlimited Elite and HBO Max Option

What's happening

AT&T no longer bundles HBO Max with its top unlimited plan.

Why it matters

The move means the carrier does not offer a video streaming service with any of its wireless plans, though existing customers who have HBO Max included can still use the service.

What's next

Verizon has announced that HBO Max will be a partner for its new Plus Play program launching later this year, making it possible deals for HBO could soon come from one of AT&T's wireless rivals.

If you were thinking of switching to AT&T or upgrading your plan to get HBO Max, you may need to think again. This week, the telecom giant quietly updated its top unlimited wireless plan, dropping the Unlimited Elite option in favor of a new Unlimited Premium offering.

The pricing remains the same ($85 per month for a single line, $50 per month, per line if on a family plan with four lines), but there are two differences. The new Unlimited Premium now comes with 50GB per month of high-speed hotspot data (up from 40GB per month on Elite) and, more notably, no longer comes with HBO Max included.

"HBO Max is a great service, but we constantly experiment with the features we offer our customers to give them the best value," AT&T spokesman Jim Greer said. Greer added that those who already have an Unlimited Elite plan with the carrier will continue to receive free HBO Max.

As of Tuesday afternoon, the company's prepaid carrier, Cricket Wireless, continues to offer HBO Max's ad-supported tier as part of its highest-priced unlimited plan.

The dropping of the Unlimited Elite and its bundled HBO Max subscription comes nearly two months after the completion of the Warner Bros. Discovery megamerger, a $43 billion deal that saw AT&T exit the media business and combine its WarnerMedia assets with Discovery.

With this week's move, AT&T no longer has a video streaming partner for its main wireless service. The carrier has previously included HBO or HBO Max in some of its unlimited plans dating back to 2017 and it, along with rivals T-Mobile and Verizon, have used the bundling of streaming services as a way to attract customers or encourage existing subscribers to switch to newer, sometimes pricier, unlimited plans.

T-Mobile has long offered free subscriptions to Netflix with some of its offerings and, depending on the plan you have, now also offers a free year of Paramount Plus Essentials and Apple TV Plus

Verizon has frequently advertised its offering of the Disney Bundle (Disney Plus, ESPN Plus and Hulu) with some of its higher-priced unlimited plans in recent years, and has previously offered a free year of Discovery Plus. Earlier this year, Verizon introduced a Plus Play content management platform and in April announced that HBO Max will be a partner in that service.

Verizon has said that a full launch of Plus Play will be coming later this year, with the program offering "exclusive deals." It remains to be seen if Verizon will offer any deals for HBO Max as part of Plus Play.

New Emoji Candidates Up for Approval Soon: Jellyfish, Goose, Turquoise Heart and More

A goose, moose, jellyfish, turquoise heart, head shake and pair of maracas are among the new emoji that could be on their way to your phone. The Emoji 15.0 update includes all those candidates and more, and it could be hitting devices as soon as this fall.

Earlier this summer, emoji reference website Emojipedia published sample designs for each emoji candidate that Unicode, the global standard for messaging, could approve for widespread use in September. (Here's what they look like.)

Not all the candidates are guaranteed to be approved by Unicode. If they are, they may have a slightly different look once Apple and Google add them to their platforms, Emojipedia's Keith Broni wrote in a blog post. Most of the emoji candidates in recent years have made the final update lists, Broni added.

Once Unicode finalizes the list in September, it may still take a while for the new emoji to be rolled out to devices. Emojipedia released a tentative schedule for the rollout:

  • September: The final version of Emoji could be released.
  • October to December: Google and Android could start supporting the new emoji.
  • January to October 2023: The majority of platforms will add support for the emoji, including Twitter, Facebook, Apple and Samsung.

With the surge in digital learning and not being able to visit friends in person, many kids are spending more time on their phones and computers. The safety concerns for kids online haven't lessened, but learning about parental controls and safety apps can help bring some peace of mind to parents.

Net Nanny

Net Nanny is an app that uses AI to block questionable or dangerous content before your child sees it. The app can filter certain websites and monitors your child's digital activity, and can also monitor and limit screen time. The software's Family Feed feature can report what your child is searching online and what apps your child uses and can alert you to content such as pornography, weapons and drugs.

Net Nanny is compatible with Android and iOS, as well as Windows, Mac and Fire. The software costs $55 per year to cover PC, Mac and mobile for a five-device family. Net Nanny also offers a $40 annual plan to cover one Mac desktop and a 20-device protection package for $90 per year.

In the wake of the coronavirus outbreak, Net Nanny also offers a dedicated filter to block coronavirus sites and searches to help kids who might feel anxious.

Bark

Bark is another option for parents who want to keep kids safe online. The app monitors texts and emails, along with YouTube and over 30 social media networks for questionable content your child might be searching or viewing. Bark sends parents alerts if it detects signs of cyberbullying, depression, online predators, adult content and more. You can also decide which platforms you want to monitor, if you want to give your child some privacy. The app recently launched a new screen-time management feature so parents can monitor their kids' accounts as well as set screen time limits from the same app.

Bark has a seven-day free trial and then costs $14 a month ($99 annually) per family with iOS and Android devices. You can also subscribe to Bark Jr, the company's entry-level product, for $5 a month ($49 annually). Bark Jr focuses on screen time management, website filtering and location check-ins.

OurPact

ourpaact
OurPact

The OurPact parenting app helps families balance screen time for free on iOS and Android devices. The app lets parents limit access to certain apps, filter websites, enable GPS monitoring, and schedule screen time and recurring activities like bedtime. It also allows parents to block or grant internet and app access at anytime.

In response to the coronavirus outbreak, OurPact said that it's offering three months free access to premium features, normally $7 per month. Premium can manage up to 20 devices, keep tabs on all the apps on your child's device and mark as Always Blocked, Per Schedule and Always Allowed. Premium also enables a spendable screen time allowance, the family locator feature and geo-fence creator for alerts, text blocking and web filters.

Typically, OurPact's base plan is free and offers one schedule, and five blocks and unlimited grants for one device. OurPact also has a Plus plan for $2 per month that offers unlimited schedules, and manual blocks and grants for 10 devices.

SafeToNet

Kids will be communicating over devices while in lockdown since they can't see their friends. The SafeToNet app, which is now available on iOS and Android in the US, has a safeguarding keyboard powered by AI to judge, guide and advise a child in real time as they search for content and message others. The app's goal is to help the child become more responsible and safe online without feeling like they don't have any privacy.

Parents won't be able to see what's being written, but can view insights like the time of day when high-risk messages are sent and the top five apps used by their child. SafeToNet can show what issues the child most struggles with, too.

The software will flag certain messages if the AI detects bullying, abuse, aggression or sexting, for example. SafeToNet gives the child a moment to pause before sending a message they can't take back. Plus, the app provides breathing exercises when anxiety is detected, lessons about self-esteem and an emotion diary.

To help during the pandemic, SafeToNet is offering its services free to families for the next 30 days.

Google Family Link

Google Family Link lets you create a Google account for your child (if they're under 13 years old) with access to most Google services, including Gmail and Photos. If your child is over 13, they have to consent to using Google Family Link. The app lets parents keep track of their kid's Google account and guide them to age-appropriate content. Parents can also approve or deny which apps their kids want to download. Family Link shows parents apps that teachers recommend, which parents can add directly to the child's phone.

The service is compatible with Chromebook, iOS and Android. It includes other parental controls such as screen time limits, locking the phone for family time and location tracking.

Skip Meat Once a Week to Reduce Your Grocery Bill and Save Money

Skip Meat Once a Week to Reduce Your Grocery Bill and Save Money

This story is part of Home Tips, CNET's collection of practical advice for getting the most out of your home, inside and out.

You've likely heard the phrase "Meatless Monday" before. It's a simple enough statement to understand: You skip eating meat one day a week to improve your nutrition. But going meatless once a week has many benefits besides lowering your risk of cancer, heart disease and obesity.

I went vegetarian in college for the environmental benefits of reducing meat intake, but now as a graduate with a full-time job, going meatless has helped me save a ton of money on groceries too. With high gas prices, inflation and rising utility bills, it's important to find ways to save money around the home. One of the simplest ways to save cash and stretch your food budget is to go meatless one (or more) days a week. Here's how much you can expect to save. (For more money-saving tips, you can check out our tips on how to save money around your home and how to cut your electric bill.)

What is Meatless Monday?

Meatless Monday isn't just a fad or a snappy phrase created by vegans or vegetarians to get you to stop eating your favorite meals. Meatless Monday is actually an initiative created by the Center for a Livable Future at Johns Hopkins Bloomberg School of Public Health in 2003 to address public health, ecological and global food security concerns. CLF deduced that reducing your intake of meat or animal products, even one day a week, can protect your personal health and nutrition, global health and the environment.

CLF defines going "meatless" as cutting out all red meat, poultry or seafood for one day a week, every week. These meat-centered meals can be swapped for meals built around beans, lentils, vegetables, whole grains and other plant-based proteins.

While not necessary to make an impact, millions of people globally have opted for diets that cut out meat permanently, either identifying as vegetarian (someone who does not eat meat) or vegan, someone who does not eat any meat, animal products or animal byproducts (meat, poultry, fish, seafood, dairy and eggs).

Nearly 14.5% of all global greenhouse gas emissions are due to meat and dairy production.

Why go meatless?

According to CLF, the rationale is that "meat consumption in the US and globally must be significantly reduced to mitigate the public health and environmental effects of climate change, particularly in high-income countries." Nearly 14.5% of all global greenhouse gas emissions are due to meat and dairy production, according to the UN's Food and Agricultural Organization.

Switching to a vegetarian, vegan or largely plant-based diet can greatly reduce emissions considering the climate impact of plant-based foods is typically 10 to 50 times smaller than that of animal products.

Meat is also typically high in saturated fat and cholesterol, and many chronic health conditions are linked to higher intakes of animal products, especially red meat. This isn't to say everyone needs to cut out meat to have a healthier diet, but on average, Americans eat more meat than is recommended by health experts. In fact, Americans eat more than 1.5 times the average daily protein requirement and more than three times the global average of meat consumption, according to CLF.

Simply replacing meats with vegetables, fruits, whole grains and plant-based proteins, such as nuts and legumes, will ease dietary concerns. For tips on how to grocery shop, these are the cheapest fruits and veggies you can buy right now. Plus, here are tips on how to keep fruits and vegetables fresh for longer.

How much can you actually save by going meatless?

Though many people may believe buying fresh produce will break the bank, plant-based proteins and meatless diets tend to be less expensive and offer more health benefits than meat. Think about it, rather than buying $18 New York Strip steaks for dinner you could spend $1.48 on a head of lettuce with cucumbers and grape tomatoes to make a salad for significantly less.

Meat per pound is significantly more expensive than fruits and vegetables per-pound. Based on current food prices in the US, 1 pound of beef costs $6.19 and 1 pound of chicken costs $5.25, while fruits and vegetables average around $1 to $2 per pound.

A survey of over 1,000 Americans conducted by Sous Vide Guy found that roughly 1 in 4 people who consume meat didn't believe a plant-based diet was a cheaper alternative. However, people on meatless diets spent an average of $23 less on food every week. Plus, that number can rise dramatically for those purchasing nitrate free, non-GMO or organic meats.

Using this figure, if you cut out meat, you could save $1,196 over the course of a year.

While you won't save as much by only cutting out meat once a week, every bit helps. To learn more about plant-based diets, read our guide on the pros and cons of a plant-based lifestyle, and how to safely remove meat from your diet. Twitter's Jack Dorsey steps down as CEO

Jack Dorsey has stepped down as chief executive of Twitter, the social network he co-founded nearly 16 years ago, turning over the top spot to Parag Agrawal, the company's chief technology officer.

"I've decided to leave Twitter because I believe the company is ready to move on from its founders," Dorsey, who is also CEO of payments company Square, said in a statement Monday. "My trust in Parag as Twitter's CEO is deep."

Dorsey will remain on Twitter's board through the end of his term in 2022 to help with the transition. CNBC reported the move earlier Monday.

Parag Agrawal, Twitter's new CEO

Twitter

The leadership shift comes amid mounting scrutiny of Dorsey and Twitter from investors seeking better returns and from lawmakers concerned about the company's moderation policies for political speech. Last year, Elliott Management, an activist investment fund, began putting pressure on Dorsey to step aside after the CEO said he wanted to spend up to half a year in Africa. The fund ultimately struck a deal with the company that allowed Dorsey to remain CEO. The deal included an influx of $1 billion in new capital from Silver Lake, a large technology investor.

Twitter has also pushed back against accusations it censors conservative politicians and commentators but also took the rare step earlier this year of permanently banning Donald Trump, who was president at the time, because of concerns his remarks could incite violence after the Jan. 6 Capitol Hill riot

Under Dorsey's leadership, Twitter has more aggressively experimented with new features including newsletters, live audio and tipping to rope in more users. He also oversaw the company's first profit, which it recorded in 2018, and set a goal of doubling its annual revenue to at least $7.5 billion in 2023. Twitter, which has 211 million daily users who see ads, wants to reach at least 315 million daily active users in 2023.

Elliott Management managing partner Jesse Cohn and senior portfolio manager Marc Steinberg expressed support for the leadership changes.

"Twitter is now executing against an ambitious multi-year plan to dramatically increase the company's reach and value, and we look forward to the next chapter of Twitter's story," the pair said in a statement.

In a farewell email to Twitter employees, Dorsey sidestepped the issue of external pressure, saying he was leaving the company because it was ready to move past a "founder-led" structure.

"I want you all to know that this was my decision and I own it," Dorsey wrote in the email, which he also tweeted. "I'm really sad…yet really happy."

Dorsey expressed confidence in Agrawal's ability to run Twitter, saying "he leads with heart and soul, and is someone I learn from daily."

Agrawal joined Twitter in 2011 and has served as the company's CTO since 2017. As CTO, he led the social network's technical strategy and advanced the use of machine learning at Twitter, according to the company.

Agrawal followed up with his own note to employees, also shared on Twitter. In the note, he said he's focused on the company's opportunities ahead.

"We recently updated our strategy to hit ambitious goals, and I believe that strategy to be bold and right," he wrote. "But our critical challenge is how we work to execute against it and deliver results -- that's how we'll make Twitter the best it can be for our customers, shareholders and for each of you."

Agrawal, who has more than 109,600 followers on Twitter, doesn't share his thoughts often on the social network. He's tweeted or retweeted only 24 times this year, according to his timeline. Dorsey has 5.9 million followers on Twitter.

The company's stock spiked following news reports on Monday morning and settled about 3% higher. Trading was then halted.

Dorsey had been CEO of the social network since 2015, when he took over following the resignation of Dick Costolo. Dorsey also briefly served as Twitter's first CEO starting in 2007 but was fired 16 months later.

Twitter went through a rough patch when Dorsey first returned. In 2016, the company cut 9% of its workforce, and reports surfaced that multiple companies, including Disney and Salesforce, were interested in buying Twitter. No deal materialized. The company also killed off short-form video app Vine before TikTok rose in popularity.

Dorsey also shepherded the company through a period of intense scrutiny of social media platforms. Along with Mark Zuckerberg, the CEO of Facebook's parent company, Dorsey became a frequent visitor to Congress, testifying at multiple hearing on social media. (Watch a highlight reel of Dorsey's and Zuckerberg's November 2021 appearance before the Senate here.)

Throughout his tenure at Twitter, Dorsey has cultivated the image of New Age tech guru. He eats one meal a day and takes ice baths. according to The New York Times, which called him "Gwyneth Paltrow for Silicon Valley." Dorsey also goes on meditation retreats, which have occasionally gotten him into trouble. In 2018, the executive faced vocal criticism for traveling to Myanmar on a meditation retreat amid international accusations the country's military had committed widespread human rights abuses against the country's Rohingya people, a Muslim minority.

Dorsey's ownership stake in Twitter has made him a billionaire. The Bloomberg Billionaires Index ranks Dorsey as the world's 174th richest person, with more than $12 billion in assets.

According to a document filed with the SEC, Agrawal will receive a salary of $1 million. By comparison, Dorsey famously took a 2018 salary of $1.40, one cent for each of the number of characters tweets were initially limited to. (Agrawal is also eligible for a bonus and stock grants.)

Dorsey remains CEO of Square, a digital payments company he co-founded in 2009. In July, Square said it would launch a new business focused on bitcoin  to help developers design decentralized financial products. Dorsey is an enthusiastic supporter of bitcoin and helped form an endowment to make it the "internet's currency."

Star Wars Celebration 2022: Best Products You Can Buy From Home

Star Wars Celebration 2022: Best Products You Can Buy From Home

May the Fourth was only a few weeks ago, but with something as awesome as Star Wars, it's worth celebrating more than once a year. Star Wars Celebration 2022 is about to be underway in Anaheim, but you don't have to travel to the sunny California city to get some cool merch. Yes, there are some items like action figures that will initially be exclusive to Star Wars Celebration attendees, but a number of retailers have special offerings that you can order from the comfort of your home.

So that you don't have to scour the internet yourself, we've rounded up some of the coolest items available for Star Wars Celebration 2022, things like tees, Hawaiian shirts, watches and toys. We'll continue to update this page as more retailers release new Star Wars-themed products throughout the event. Be sure to check back often, so you don't miss out.

Lego

With the announcement of Star Wars Jedi: Survivor comes a brand-new creation from the minds at Lego. Cal Kestis's handy droid partner, BD-1, is now available in brick form. The new Lego set weighs in at 1,062 bricks. It's available for preorder at $100 and releases August 1.

Disney

Modern Star Wars action figures are pretty dang cool, but nothing can quite match the nostalgic and simplistic design of the original Kenner figures released for the movies' first run in theatres. Right now, Disney's online store has a full set of figures available for preorder for $70. The set releases July 11 and comes with Luke, Han Solo, Leia, Chewbacca, Darth Vader and a stormtrooper.

Disney

The deadliest bounty hunter in the galaxy has a new statue that's available for preorder now. Diamond Select Toys' Boba Fett gallery diorama features his look from The Mandalorian season 2 and The Book of Boba Fett. It releases July 5 and costs $50.

RSVLTS

From tees and Hawaiian shirts to shorts and drink cozies, RSVLTS has a varied selection of items available for Star Wars Celebration this year. There are a number of great Hawaiian shirts that feature patterns of pretty much everything from the original trilogy, including Wookiees and Boba Fett's Christmas special debut. A number of the shirts also have a matching pair of shorts you can buy separately. The Hawaiian shirts are available for $70 each, while the shorts and tees are $65 and $32 respectively. And if you want something to keep your drinks cold, the cozies are $6 each.

Jenmarie

To coincide with the show, JediKaylin.com has a special assortment of Obi-Wan Kenobi merch, such as tees, sweaters and patches that are themed around the new Disney+ show. Star Wars blogger Jenmarie also has a special offer. You can use code JENMARIE10 for 10% off your order.

Citizen

Citizen unveiled a number of new watch designs inspired by iconic Star Wars characters for May the Fourth, and they're available now for purchase. Inspired by Citizen's original analog design, the watches are inspired by characters like Boba Fett, C-3PO, Darth Vader and more. They start at $280. Citizen also has a number of other Star Wars designs that are worth checking out.

Jazwares

The Mandalorian's Razor Crest ship is also available in micro form. Mando's bounty-hunting cruiser measures 7 inches long and features an opening cockpit, rear boarding ramp and carbonite freezing chamber for those pesky bounties. It comes with 1-inch articulated figures of Mando, Greef Karga and Grogu.

Maserati Project24 Is a Track-Only MC20 With 740 HP

Building a performance car for the road means working within all sorts of regulatory fences. Building a performance car that is only legal on the track, however, gives companies far more leeway when it comes to maximizing capability. To that end, the Maserati MC20 is one heck of a road-legal supercar, but Maserati has something even wilder coming down the pipeline.

Maserati on Friday unveiled the Project24, a track-only version of the MC20 that takes things to an entirely new level. Maserati's 3.0-liter twin-turbocharged V6 features a new pair of snails that boosts output from 621 horsepower to 740. All that power gets sent to the rear wheels by way of a six-speed sequential racing transmission, a racing clutch and a mechanical limited-slip differential. It will be a fair bit lighter, too, with Maserati aiming for a final curb weight under 2,755 pounds.

That is one seriously large trident.

Maserati

Gone is the road-legal bodywork, and in its place is a new carbon fiber body riddled with aerodynamic upgrades, including adjustable front and rear wings. The front and side windows are made of motorsport-friendly Lexan. Maserati also includes FIA-compliant parts like a roll cage, a fire extinguisher and a 31-gallon fuel tank.

There are plenty more race car bits where that came from. Onboard air jacks will put the Project24 in the air during pit stops. Brembo carbon-ceramic ventilated race brakes are standard, as are 18-inch center-lock alloy wheels wrapped in proper racing slicks. The front and rear anti-roll bar are adjustable, as are the dampers.

I can only imagine how wild this car sounds.

Maserati

And we haven't even made it inside the Project24 yet. The cabin is, as you might expect, fully equipped for racing. Standard equipment inside includes adjustable pedals, an adjustable steering column, six-point harnesses, a carbon-fiber steering wheel with an integrated display, air conditioning and adjustable anti-lock brakes. Owners can take it a step further with optional equipment that includes a rear-view camera, telemetry recording and a tire pressure monitoring system.

Only 62 of these cars will be built, and each will come with "track-specific experiences and state-of-the-art support," according to the automaker's press release. Pricing has not been announced, but it will certainly command a fair chunk of your wallet.

Discord Fans: Say Bye to That 'Android Support Coming Soon' Message

Discord Fans: Say Bye to That 'Android Support Coming Soon' Message

Discord's Android app might have caused some users some frustration in the past. Sometimes Android users would see a message that reads "Android support coming soon" after an update was released while iOS and desktop users enjoyed new features. But that message might be a thing of the past.

Discord announced a major update on Aug. 1 to the Android app's development framework. Users should expect significant improvements to the app after an automatic update is released in the coming weeks after Discord rebuilt the app using the development framework React Native.

This framework was developed by Meta and has been used to power Android and iOS apps like Facebook and Bloomberg. What makes this framework special is it allows developers to work across platforms without much additional effort, saving time and energy.

This means Android users should start to receive updates at about the same speed as iOS and desktop users.

Design details will be more uniform across the different platforms, but they will still be unique. For example, after new Android users download the app, they will be met with a larger font that is similar to that in the iOS app. Current users will have the option to change the font in the Discord settings.

The new development process also means that Android users should receive more frequent updates. Prior to the update, Discord teams would have to maintain different codebases for different devices, but the new development process consolidates the work. Since the teams will have fewer codebases to maintain, they will be able to address any bug fixes or other updates in a more timely manner.

While the new update means Android users should receive future updates faster, some users who have downloaded the update have complained on Reddit that the update is making the app buggy. Issues in major updates to apps or software are not uncommon, and they're usually resolved over time.

If you're an Android user and don't have the Discord app, you can download it from the Google Play Store.

WWE Clash of Champions 2020: Results, full recap and analysis

WWE Clash of Champions 2020: Results, full recap and analysis

WWE Clash of Champions saw almost every main-roster champion defend their gold (Nia Jax and Shayna Baszler, Women's Tag Team Champions, were taken off the show for unknown reasons), so it's remarkable that only one title changed hands: The opening bout saw Sami Zayn win back the Intercontinental Championship in an excellent ladder match.

Drew McIntyre retained his WWE Championship by beating Randy Orton in a confounding Ambulance Match, while Romain Reigns soundly defeated Jey Uso to keep his Universal Championship.

It was a decent show, with nothing abjectly bad to report. Outside of the opener though, it's hard to say that anything was particularly good. At worst, it was a little boring (Asuka versus Zelina Vega, Apollo Crews versus Bobby Lashley), and there was a botched finish (Raw Tag Team Championships).

If you skipped the show and want to know what to catch up on, watch the opening and closing matches. Everything else is safely skippable.

Roman Reigns retains Universal Championship via forfeit

Roman Reigns, as if there was any doubt, is still your Universal Champion. He defeated Jey Uso after Jey's brother, Jimmy, ran down to the ring and literally threw in the towel. Reigns had already speared Jey twice, and was throwing mounted strikes when Jimmy threw in the towel.

A bit of a letdown match. The way it was built -- with Reigns smashing Jey around the arena, and the announcers talking at length at how Jey is over his head -- seemed to indicate a big, fiery Jey comeback with a few close calls. But there really weren't any, other than a superkick-splash combo that we all knew wouldn't be a three count.

Jey didn't really shine the way he should have, as this was all about solidifying Reigns as a badass heel. And that's fine, but the way the bout built up, with a super slow start and heavy Reigns offense throughout, it felt like an anticlimax for Reigns to win so decisively and unceremoniously.

That said, it was mission accomplished as it relates to Reigns as a heel. He is awesome in this role.

Rating: 3 stars.

Drew McIntyre is still WWE Champion

After a fantastically stupid match, Drew McIntyre defeated Randy Orton to retain his WWE Championship.

The two competed in an Ambulance Match, so to win one had to stuff his opponent into a standby ambulance and close its doors. It ended with McIntyre hitting a Claymore Kick, a Orton Punt, tossing Orton inside and shutting the door on their rivalry (probably).

So that's all fine. The dumb part? McIntyre was helped throughout the match by the legends Orton has injured over the past few months. Around a minute into the bout, The Big Show appeared and chokeslammed Orton through the announcer's table. Later, when McIntyre and Orton were brawling backstage, Christian gave McIntyre a reprieve by surprise attacking Orton. Towards the end, as Orton was standing tall atop the ambulance, Shawn Michaels hit him with a surprise Sweet Chin Music.

Each time McIntyre, the hero, got a huge helping hand, Orton, the villain, valiantly fought back. The psychology was all wrong. Instead of McIntyre getting a hard-fought victory, he barely won after getting help from three legends.

Rating: 1 star. Just re-watch their awesome SummerSlam match.

Sasha Banks attacks Bayley

Bayley was meant to defend her SmackDown Women's Championship against Nikki Cross, but Cross, possibly due to COVID-19, was unable to make the show. Instead Bayley had an open challenge -- which was answered by Asuka.

It was a quick match that saw Asuka dominate a flustered Bayley. But after a few minutes, Bayley, scrambling on the outside, hit Asuka with a steel chair to retain her championship by disqualification.

After the match, Sasha Banks appeared out of nowhere and hit Bayley with a chair of her own. After Bayley briefly got the upper hand, Banks wailed on her with a Kendo Stick a bit before Bayley retreats.

Street Profits beat Andrade and Angel Garza

Botched finish to an otherwise strong tag team match. Angelo Dawkins pinned Andrade with a spinebuster even though Andrade very clearly kicked out at two. It appears to have come after Angel Garza legitimately injured himself, as Andrade and a bunch of refs were checking on him after the match.

What on paper was looking to be another Raw-quality tag team title match ended up being a lot of fun, thanks in large part to Andrade and Garza being so exciting to watch. They're both just so crisp, and The Street Profits are solid babyfaces, with quality selling and comebacks.

Rating: 2.5 stars. Bad finish notwithstanding.

Bobby Lashley retains US Championship

After a back-and-forth match, Bobby Lashley tapped out Apollo Crews with a Full Nelson (or Hurt Lock, as it's now being called).

Not much to say about this match. They had a similar bout at Payback, and though they worked hard it was a very straightforward bout. Back and forth moves, not much of a story (other than MVP talking smack to Crews throughout, which was moderately amusing) but at least a clean ending.

Rating: 2 stars. It was fine.

Asuka submits Zelina Vega

Asuka retained her Raw Women's Championship after Zelina Vega tapped out to the Asuka Lock.

This was rough going. Zelina Vega's strength isn't in wrestling -- at least, not yet -- and so this match was essentially Asuka wrestling around Vega, working hard to make Vega's offense look as formidable as possible. The story of the bout was that Asuka kept attempting the Asuka Lock, but Vega kept on finding ways to counter.

It got more fun as it went on, but Vega's weaknesses were hard to ignore.

Rating: 2 stars. After the match, Asuka cuts a promo saying Vega was a tough opponent but not ready for Asuka. She tried to shake hands, but Vega threw a fit and kicked Asuka. Asuka then spoke angrily in Japanese, which is awesome all the time, ending the segment. Expect a rematch soon.

Sami Zayn wins awesome ladder match

Jeff Hardy, Sami Zayn and AJ Styles beat the crap out of each other. This triple threat ladder match ended with Sami Zayn unhooking the two Intercontinental championships -- Jeff Hardy's, and Sami Zayn's old one he claimed he never lost -- to become the undisputed IC champ.

This was a fantastic match. It started as a standard, very good ladder match. It escalated with thrilling spots, like Jeff Hardy being a maniac and hitting a Swanton Bomb off the tippy top of a ladder, crashing Zayn through another ladder. AJ Styles owned much of the match, dominating the first two thirds.

The final stretch was extra imaginative. Zayn brought out two pairs of handcuffs. He tied Hardy -- through his earlobe -- to a ladder, and handcuffed himself to Styles. As Styles struggled to climb a ladder while hoisting Zayn, Hardy, still attached to ladder, attacked Styles.

Zayn got a key from his mouth, uncuffed himself from Styles, climbed the ladder and won the match.

Rating: 4.25 stars. Great ladder match. This is one of those matches you wish had a crowd.

Shinsuke Nakamura and Cesaro retain tag team titles

Shinsuke Nakamura and Cesaro defeated Lucha House Party in the kickoff show to retain their SmackDown Tag Team Championships. Nakamura and Cesaro hit their awesome tag team finish -- Cesaro's Giant Swing into Nakamura's Kinshahsa -- for the pin.

Apple Watch Series 5 vs. Fitbit Versa 2: Best smartwatch to give as a gift

The Apple Watch Series 5 starts at $399 (£399, AU$649) and makes an ideal gift for an iPhone user who wants to keep an eye on their health and fitness goals, or get notifications from their phone. But the Fitbit Versa 2 costs half as much and has many similar features, plus it works across Android and iOS. I've been wearing both these watches for a few weeks to determine which one is better at tracking workouts, getting notifications and has the best battery life.

Angela Lang/CNET

A versatile hybrid that's equal parts smartwatch and fitness tracker, the Versa 2 adds a few improvements over the first version that make it a good option for Apple and Android owners alike. Like the Apple Watch, it too has an always-on display, but the battery will last more than twice as long. Expect at least five days between charges if you don't have the always-on display active. It also gives you built-in sleep tracking, Alexa support and Spotify control on your wrist.

Read the Fitbit Versa 2 hands-on.

All-day comfort so you can go from the office to the gym

The Apple Watch comes in two sizes (40mm and 44mm) while the Versa 2 just comes in one size. I have a fairly small wrist and found both of these watches very comfortable to wear all day. With the Versa 2, I hardly had to take it off at all because I could use it to track my sleep.

Want a wide range of finishes and straps to choose from? You'll find the biggest selection with the Apple Watch. Everything from aluminum and stainless steel to the more expensive ceramic and titanium finishes that cost upward of $800. The Versa 2 has three aluminum color finishes with a variety of straps.

Angela Lang/CNET

The Versa 2 gets a much nicer color AMOLED display than the first generation Versa and it's easy to see in bright sunlight when the brightness is turned to max. (The always-on display could be a little brighter for me during outdoor workouts, however.) Notifications and on-screen prompts are clear and legible.

The Apple Watch uses a color LTPO OLED Retina display. It also has Force Touch, so you can press on the screen to register different options.

They're both water-resistant to 50 meters (164 feet) so you can use them to track swims and they'll be fine if subjected to occasional splashes.

Fitbit still makes its straps pretty difficult to swap in and out, as they have tiny toggles, whereas the Apple Watch is simpler with a button to slide the strap in and out. The charging dock for the Versa 2 is also a pain. Not only is it not backward-compatible with older generations of Fitbit watches like the original Versa, the cord doesn't tuck underneath the dock neatly so it's next to impossible to get your watch to lie flat on the dock when it's charging.

Smart features put the Apple Watch a step ahead

If you like customizing the look of your watch face, the Versa 2 has a lot more options to choose from than the Apple Watch, including third-party watch faces. There's even a Bitmoji watch face that changes expressions depending on your activity or time of day (my personal favorite).

Both have an always-on display and, thanks to the latest Fitbit OS 4.1 update, the Versa 2 now gets the option of a color always-on display, like the Apple Watch. But the Apple Watch only makes it through one whole day with a little extra to spare when I have the always-on display active. That's with a 40-minute workout thrown in and regular use throughout the day getting notifications from my phone. The Versa 2 makes it two-and-a-half days with always-on active and the same usage. That goes up to five-and-a-half days when the display is set to raise-to-wake.

Being smartwatches, both support voice assistants, though they handle that in a different way. With the Versa 2 you get Alexa support to control smart devices, check the weather, start a workout or set reminders. There's no speaker, so you'll have to read the screen to check responses. And it's kind of slow.

With the Apple Watch closely integrated with Siri, you can speak the wake word or hold the button to summon the assistant. You'll be able to hear Siri talk, send text messages, speak responses and do most of what Siri offers on your phone.

Of course, you'll also be able to customize what notifications come through from your phone on both of these watches. However, you will only be able to respond to notifications from the Versa 2 if you're on Android, not iPhone. Both allow you to accept and reject calls from your wrist, regardless of what phone you're tied to, but if you have the Versa 2 you won't be able to take the call on your wrist because there's no speaker -- you'll need to grab your phone.

For me, the biggest advantage that the Apple Watch has over the Versa 2 when it comes to smart features is built-in connectivity, both GPS and cellular, which means you can leave your phone at home and take calls, send messages or stream music on the go when doing an outdoor workout, for example. (It does come at an extra cost, however.) With Emergency SOS you'll also be able to call emergency services from your wrist and share your location, plus alert your emergency contacts. The Apple Watch Series 5 also offers a built-in compass.

Both offer music storage, although it's more complicated to pull across music to the Versa 2 from a computer than it is to use the seamless transfer offered between the iPhone and Apple Watch. You can also pay with your wrist thanks to Fitbit Pay and Apple Pay on the Versa 2 and Apple Watch respectively.

I've been testing the Apple Watch and Versa 2 primarily with an iPhone and definitely feel the Apple Watch was the faster of the two when it comes to syncing and transferring settings. Occasionally, I have noticed integrations with third-party apps such as Spotify and Snapchat for the Bitmoji face require me to log in and sync again through the Fitbit app.

Read about some of the other features offered in WatchOS 6 on the Apple Watch.

Fitness tracking is Fitbit's forte, but Apple has ECG

I have used both of these watches during a number of different workouts (Pilates, indoor spin class, outdoor runs and outdoor bike rides) and have been impressed with the results from both. During my outdoor run, for example, both gave fairly consistent results when it came to tracking my heart rate, although I did find the Apple Watch updated my heart rate slightly faster. I haven't yet tested these watches against the gold standard in consumer heart rate tracking, a chest strap.

The Versa 2, however, can show you what heart rate zone you're in during a workout, such as cardio or fat burn, which I appreciate. Only the Apple Watch offers you on-wrist cadence tracking so you can see your steps per minute, plus pace alerts for running that can notify you if you fall below your chosen pace. You can see your pace on the wrist for the Versa 2, but you won't get alerts.

Both watches can track plenty of different workouts and automatically detect certain activities like running or walking. I find it easier to see and interpret the data from my workouts using the Fitbit app rather than trying to search for it across the Activity app or Health app on iPhone.

Fitbit also offers the Coach app (you'll need to download and sync it across to the watch from the Fitbit app) which puts three free workouts with visual guidance on your wrist. This hasn't changed since the first Versa but it's still a nice touch for those who might not have time for a full workout. You can pay for a Fitbit Premium subscription ($9.99 a month in the US) to get more workouts.

Sleep tracking on the Versa 2.

Sarah Tew/CNET

Sleep tracking is only available natively on the Versa 2 and I really like how Fitbit shows you a breakdown of your different sleep stages, such as REM and deep sleep, plus gives you a sleep score out of 100. Thanks to the latest OS 4.1 update, you can now see your sleep score on the Versa 2 and the watch now has a feature that vibrates to wake you at the optimal time in your sleep cycle (within 30 minutes of your alarm). Fitbit calls this smart wake.

Unfortunately the app won't tell you much about how to improve the sleep score (apart from some standard prompts to go to bed on time) unless you have a Fitbit Premium subscription which has more advanced sleep tools and analysis.

I also found that there was sometimes a variance between how I felt and the sleep score: For example, one night I got 8.5 hours of rest and felt great in the morning, but my sleep score was in the low 60s. The sleep score does take into account your restoration, which is sleeping heart rate and how much you toss and turn during the night. (Maybe I'm an overly active sleeper, because my restoration score showed a lot of restlessness.)

The Apple Watch helps you keep tabs on your daily activity using a ring-based system, which hasn't changed since the first generation. On the Versa 2 you can find your daily metrics in the Today section by swiping down from the main screen.

As for health and heart tracking in particular, the Apple Watch Series 5 pulls ahead. With a built-in ECG (electrocardiogram) that's FDA-cleared, the watch can also detect high, low and irregular heart rates and notify you accordingly. It also has fall detection. Both watches offer menstrual cycle tracking, although you can't log details on the Versa 2 like you can on the Apple Watch. Instead, you'll need to do that in the Fitbit app.

Which one's right for me?

Considering the Versa 2 costs half as much as the Apple Watch Series 5, if money is your concern, then this is the watch for you. Especially because it works across Android and iOS. It also has a wide range of activities that it can track and the Fitbit app makes it really easy to see your fitness metrics.

For runners, or those who want to leave their phone at home and stream music on the go, make calls or send messages, the Apple Watch with built-in LTE is the clear choice. It also has the benefit of ECG in certain countries.

Also, now that Apple has reduced the entry price of the Apple Watch Series 3 (which also has GPS and an LTE option) to $200, it's another good option for Apple users who want the tightest integration with an iPhone.
